The Birth of a Movement
Youth for Christ was born in the mid-1940s through an impulse from the heart of God. In 1944, Chicago pastor Torrey Johnson was elected the first president, with Billy Graham as its first full-time evangelist.
Coming to Sierra Leone
By 1950, Youth for Christ Sierra Leone was established as part of the growing international movement. In 1968, the International Council was created with Dr. Sam Wolgemuth as the first International President.
Expansion & Refinement
Youth for Christ continued its growth in ministry reach and locations throughout the 70's and 80's. Different ministry models and emphases were developed to reach young people around the world.
The "New Birth"
In 1994, a worldwide review was launched, leading to the 1996 Organisational Development Study (ODS) Report. This set in motion the most ambitious restructuring in our history, focusing on renewal and realignment.
The Valence Covenant
In 2001, the Valence Covenant established Kingdom principles and interdependence. By 2003 in Brazil, the Global Ministry Plan was unanimously approved, defining our foundational strategic focus.
Empowering a New Generation
The 2008 General Assembly in South Africa launched the Young Leader Development and Empowerment Process, investing in over 350 young leaders who now pioneer ministries worldwide.
